Not all of us are blessed with thick, luscious hair. If you just can’t seem to get the big, voluminous hair you desire, you might have fine hair. But, just because you have fine hair doesn’t mean it can’t look full! Make your fine hair look fuller using these simple fine hair care tips!

Keep in mind that fine hair is different than thin hair. If your hair is fine, the actual circumference of each strand of hair is small and narrow. Because of this, fine hair is fragile and can be damaged easily. Fine hair can be thick or thin. If you have fine thin hair, each strand is very narrow and you don’t have a lot of strands per square inch on your scalp. Choosing the best tools and products for your specific hair type is so important to making your fine hair look fuller!

How to Use a Hair Dryer to Make Fine Hair Look Fuller

A session with a good hair dryer can give your hair a beautiful blown out look, adding volume to all types of hair. It’s important to know the correct technique for blow-drying fine hair, though, because very fine hair is fragile and can be damaged easily. Before blow-drying, use a shampoo and volumizing conditioner that are designed for your specific hair type to make your fine hair look fuller.

  • Towel dry your wet hair before blow-drying it. Gently pat your hair with a towel instead of rubbing it, which can cause frizz and breakage! You are using your hair dryer as a styling tool to make your hair look fuller, so your hair should already be mostly dry before you start blow-drying it.
  • Always add a heat protectant to your hair before exposing it to any heat!
  • Divide your hair into sections. If you have very fine hair that’s thin, you will only need to divide it into between four and six sections. You can use your best judgment to decide how big or small each section should be depending on your hair’s texture, thickness, and length.
  • Use your hair dryer on a low heat setting. Hotter is not always better if you have fragile hair, as too much heat can cause your hair to become dry and frizzy.
  • Pin or clip the top sections to your head while you blow-dry the bottom sections of your hair and gradually unpin them as you go.
  • Wrap a section of your hair loosely around a ceramic round brush and pull the brush to create tension on your hair. Blow dry your hair from the ends moving up while you roll the round brush up the section of hair. When you brush in an upward motion from the bottom of your hair to the roots, it creates volume! Repeat this process on each section and layer of your hair!
  • Blow dry your hair until all of it feels warmer than room temperature. If you leave any wet or cold spots in your hair, it can become frizzy and lose the volume you’ve worked so hard for!
  • Once you’ve made sure all your hair is dry and warm, blow it all backward away from your face. This will create volume at the roots! You can part your hair on the opposite side that you normally part it for extra volume.

How to Use a Hair Straightener to Make Fine Hair Look Fuller

Adding curls will make your fine hair look fuller so it is a great style for adding volume! Achieving curls with a hair straightener takes only a few minutes, and the loose, bouncy curls will look effortlessly beautiful!

  • Always add a heat protectant to your hair before exposing it to any heat!
  • Make sure your hair is completely dry. Wet or damp hair will not hold a curl.
  • Use a thin hair straightener with a width of between one and two inches.
  • Don’t use the highest heat setting! If you have fine hair, the lower heat settings on your hair straightener will be enough to curl it!
  • Begin at the bottom of your scalp near your ears and neck and pin what you can’t curl to the top of your head. Once you complete each layer, unpin only as much as you can curl and keep the rest pinned. Smaller sections will result in tighter curls, and larger sections will result in looser curls.
  • Alternate between flicks and curls! Flicks are looser than curls. To achieve flicks, clamp the flat iron halfway down the length of the section of hair. Turn it back on itself in a half turn and then pull the hair straightener down through the ends of your hair. For curls, start closer to your scalp and do the same thing. The slower you move the flat iron down your hair’s shafts, the more pronounced the flicks and curls will be.
  • Alternating the size and shape of your curls will give your hair natural looking volume and body!
  • Spritz a little hairspray on your curls as you create them, but don’t use too much or it will make your fine hair look crunchy.

How to Use Hair Products to Make Fine Hair Look Fuller

The right hair products are life-saving when it comes to making fine hair look fuller. Make sure you choose hair products that are designed for your specific hair type!

  • Volumizing shampoo and conditioner are a must! Always look for ones with natural ingredients that won’t dry or damage your hair further. Only apply the conditioner to the ends of your hair, as it can weight the roots of your hair down and make it flat.
  • You can even use the reverse wash system. You first add a volumizing conditioner to your wet hair. Let it sit on your hair for at least one minute and then rinse it out. Then shampoo your hair normally! This trick works great for making fine, thin hair appear more voluminous.
  • Before blow-drying your hair, use a root lifter or a volumizing mousse! There are so many volumizing products on the market so you can try different ones to see which works best for you.
