Ahh dry shampoo. A useful addition to anyone’s collection of hair and beauty products. We’ve all used it at some point or another, especially us ladies!

I keep a can in my wash bag for holidays and weekend breaks. It means I don’t have to wash my hair each day when I’m away. I also use it if I’m up ridiculously early for an event and don’t have time to fully wash and blow dry my hair . This is because it’s useful for adding some texture back in before I tie it back.

Whilst dry shampoo should not be used instead of fully washing and conditioning your hair, it can be a lifesaver when you’re in a rush and don’t have the time to do it properly. It can also be useful for adding volume, especially if you’re trying to master the latest fancy up-do!

Over recent years, I’ve seen an explosion in the number of dry shampoos on the shelves. There used to be one or two brands but now, just like your regular shampoo and conditioners, we have a wide selection to choose from. And, the great news is that lots of them are specially formulated for specific hair types.

How to select the best dry shampoo?

You use dry shampoo by adding it to the roots of dry hair and then either shaking or brushing it through. It works by soaking up excess oil and dirt from your hair, making it appear cleaner than it is. Dry shampoo also helps build volume by adding texture and usually, a great fragrance will also help hide any unwashed hair smells!

I would say that the majority of the dry shampoos available on the market today are in an aerosol spray can. There are also some which come as a powder (and two of them are on this list!). The choice is up to you but for ease, the spray can is probably the simplest of the two to work with.

Cheap dry shampoo really isn’t worth your time. It can leave a sticky, chalky looking residue on your hair which let’s be honest, looks a bit like dandruff and at worse, it can make your roots look pale and like your hair is greying!

I’ve been through the best brands on the market to find the five best dry shampoos for different hair types including dark, fine and colored hair. I’ve also tested enough products to show you the ones which give the best bounce and which last the longest.

Let’s do this!

Best Dry Shampoo for Color Treated Hair: Batiste Original

This is the biggest brand out there for dry shampoo and I’m sure all of you have either owned a can or used Batiste before.

I’ve chosen their original dry shampoo although there are now plenty of other fragrances and types in the range. And the reason I’ve chosen to include this one is simply because it does the best job on colored hair.

Like most of the dry shampoos out there, this is starch based. It comes in a large aerosol spray can so it’s really easy to use and offers great value for money. The starch based formula basically soaks up the grease and dirt in your hair and helps to restore its shine. A word of warning; this one smells a little like hairspray so if you don’t like this, perhaps try one of their alternate fragrances.

If you are finding you get that white residue, chances are you’re either using too much or you’re not brushing it through. Those of you with colored hair can be confident that this product isn’t going to impact your colour in anyway. Try this product for yourself.

Best Dry Shampoo for Perfect Hair Bounce & Volume: Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle For Oily Hair

A silicone, paraben and sulfate free dry shampoo which uses the natural power of nettle leaves. This dry shampoo from Klorane wins on it’s ability to bring bounce and volume to even the oiliest hair.

Oily hair can be a real confidence drainer for many people. I’ve seen it so many times where customers over wash their hair to try and fix the problem, only to make it worse! Have you done this? Over washing oily hair can exacerbate the issue. But using a dry shampoo such as this one (which is formulated with oily hair in mind) is a great shout. It’ll stop you over washing but also help add volume back into dank, lacklustre locks.

You won’t find any nasties in this product. It’s paraben, silicone and sulfate free and also contains no sodium chloride. Why is this a good thing? Because those chemicals (often found in dry shampoo) can dry your hair out, cause scalp irritation and even contribute to hair loss!

Dry shampoo is a quick fix in any situation but the Klorane product is super fast to use, with an absorption rate of just 25 seconds from spraying. This is a product I’ve used myself. Over all I’ve been really impressed by the lack of stickiness and the volumized yet natural feel once it’s on your hair.

Best Organic Dry Shampoo Which Is Also Perfect For Dark Hair:  Alterna Bamboo Style Cleanse Extend Translucent

This is a very natural product and the only fully organic dry shampoo on my list. Whilst being organic makes Alterna’s bamboo style cleanse a meritable choice, it’s also, in my opinion, the best option for use on dark hair. Double bonus!

Clearly I don’t have dark hair but a customer of mine uses this dry shampoo and she does. She has very thick, very dark brown hair. She found that some other dry shampoos were leaving that white powdery finish you sometimes find. Because the spray from this product is translucent, you do not need to worry about white marks along your hairline after use.

Even thick hair can look limp and flat between washes but for adding texture and volume, this product performs well. In fact, even on wash days, you could use a spritz of this to add volume before styling your hair too. Click here to purchase a can.

Best Long Lasting Dry Shampoo: Oscar Blandi Pronto

Oscar Blandi is a fantastic hair stylist who’s worked with lots of celebrities including Faith Hill and Jimmy Fallon. Oscar Blandi has styled classic red carpet looks for Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel and many more. As a fellow stylist, I recognise expertise when I see them and I’m loving this hair product range. My favorite of all is pronto dry shampoo which comes in powder form.

Made from extra fine, natural starches (rice, oat and tapioca) it works by instantly soaking up dirt and oil. Plus, it leaves no sticky residue. It’s a little trickier to use than the aerosol spray cans but once you get used to it, this is a superior product which will build volume and last all day.

This is the dry shampoo I have in my own wash bag currently and it’s perfect for lighter hair shades (like mine) and I love the glossy shine which almost makes your hair look lighter.

A fresh, zingy lemon fragrance will leave your hair smelling like it’s just been washed. And, as with a lot of the products I recommend, this one is paraben, sulfate and synthetic free. Avoiding these chemicals is only going to help you on the road to healthy hair.

While no dry shampoo is a complete replacement for washing your hair, this one definitely comes a close second. It’s a little more pricy than others on the market but the results speak volumes (literally!). Give it a try today.

Best Dry Shampoo For Fine & Oily Hair:  Bumble and Bumble Pret A Powder Shampoo

This is the most expensive dry shampoo on the list but it’s also the most versatile.  Bumble and Bumble is a reliable and well known brand which is used by lots of my friends and customers. Like the Blandi shampoo, this one comes in powder form.

Bumble and Bumble advertise this as ‘equal parts dry shampoo, style extender and volume in a pinch’. Great news as this means you can use this product in different ways. Why not use to add texture for special occasion hair? Equally though, you can use it as a quick fix on lazy days when you can’t be bothered to properly wash your hair.

Customers with both light and dark hair have tried this product and reported no white residue. You can feel it in your hair though so if you’re using it on day 2 or 3 of not washing, you might find it feels a little stiff.

The reason I’ve chosen this one for fine and oily hair is it’s ability to build volume. Even when styled, fine hair can often fall flat and oily hair looks lifeless when left unwashed. As you’d expect, these hair types tend to lean towards the opposite of volumized. But, with a little Bumble and Bumble magic, anything is possible! Buy a bottle on Amazon here.

The 5 Best Dry Shampoos

So, there you have it. My top five tried and tested dry shampoos for different hair types and for long lasting and best bounce. Whether you’re using them in-between hair washing or to add volume, there is something here for everyone.

For me and no doubt you too, dry shampoo is an integral item on the list of must-have beauty products. My advice would be to try a few different ones and see which you prefer. Everyone’s hair is different and only you know exactly how it behaves between washes. Then, once you have a favorite, why not invest in a couple of bottles? I keep one in your bathroom with my makeup and other beauty essentials, and one in my travel bag. Ask me what the most useful beauty product is for weekends and overnight work trips. It’s dry shampoo!

On a final note (my bossy side is coming out!) please just remember one thing. Dry shampoo gives the illusion of clean, just washed hair but it’s just that. An illusion. Dry shampoo is great as a quick fix to freshen your hair between washes. It’s also great for adding texture during styling but remember guys, it is not a replacement for the real thing!
