Do you use a moisturizing shampoo? You should!
Everyone suffers occasionally with dry hair. Factors as varied as styling tools and hair dryers through to color treatment and even the weather can all play a part.
When your hair is dry it’s more likely to become brittle and that’s when split ends occur. Using a moisturizing shampoo can help protect your hair from drying out by keeping it nourished and healthy from root to tip.
Although lots of hair care brands claim their shampoos are moisturizing, often they aren’t quite as good as they promise to be. Sulfates, parabens and artificial fragrance and colorants can dry your hair out even if the bottle says the opposite!
These 5 shampoos are all well tried and tested for their moisturizing abilities and I know they’re going to hydrate your hair the way they say they do.
What is a moisturizing shampoo?
This sounds like a silly question right? But what actually makes a shampoo moisturizing? And how does it work?
Moisturizing shampoo works by balancing the pH of your hair which keeps your hair cuticles healthy and working properly. The natural pH of hair is usually around 5.0 – lower than that is acidic and higher is alkaline. If the balance is lost and the pH is too high, hair becomes too acidic which makes it brittle and prone to breakage. On the other hand, hair which is too alkaline (a higher pH) tends to be dull and rough feeling. In a nutshell, a great moisturizing shampoo works by balancing your hair’s pH!
Once you’ve chosen the shampoo which suits your needs, you can choose to use it alongside another shampoo by switching them throughout the week. Or if your hair is very dry, simply replace your old shampoo and use as for all of your hair washing.
Always remember to use a good nourishing conditioner too and once a month, treat your hair to a deep cleansing masque to really boost it’s shine. A good hair routine is so important and once you’ve got it nailed your hair is going to thank you for it. It’ll be easier to manage and will have a deep healthy shine too!
Now that you know what it is I’m talking about, let’s take a look at my very favorite 5 moisturizing shampoos:
Best Moisturizing Shampoo For Silky Soft Hair: Tree To Tub Soapberry For Hair in Awakening Peppermint
Have you heard of Kickstarter before? It’s a platform which allows new start up businesses to promote their products and get funding from the public. Well this is how the Tree To Tub brand was born. They were successfully able to launch this fantastic shampoo and I’m so glad they did because it’s fabulous!
Soapberries contain a natural detergent which is great for hair cleansing. Like a totally natural sulfate it also gives a nice lather during use. Actually this shampoo is totally organic, cruelty free and contains fair trade ingredients too so it’s a total winner when it comes to caring for the environment.
For those of you with sensitive skin or itchy scalp issues, Tree to Tub is dermatologically tested and is safe to use even on psoriasis and eczema. After all, there are no harsh chemicals to inflame or irritate. This is a totally natural product with no nasties.
The most immediate thing you’ll notice with this shampoo is it’s delicious peppermint fragrance. It’s so zingy and fresh. Perfect for an early morning wake up shower! It works too – your hair will feel squeaky clean and silky soft.
I was extremely impressed with this shampoo. For the silkiest, softest tangle free locks, grab yourself a bottle now.
Best Moisturizing Shampoo For Color Treated Hair: Paisle Organics Hydrating Shampoo
A great option for colored hair which comes in a cute, patterned bottle. This shampoo from Paisle Organics offers great value for money and is the perfect option for color treated hair.
Its sulfate and sodium free formula allows this shampoo to deep cleanse without stripping color from your hair and aloe vera nourishes to the root which helps keep hair follicles healthy.
Keratin is the big ticket ingredient here. Keratin is a protein which repairs damaged hair by sealing it’s cuticles. The results are tenfold; less frizz, more shine and helps prevent fade on color treated hair.
You’ll also find my favourite argan oil as well as aloe vera, hemp seed oil and rice proteins in there. Together they hydrate your hair and pump it full of vitamins and nutrients.
Sounds too good to be true for such a great value shampoo? Don’t take my word for it, or even all those happy customers on Amazon. Purchase a bottle and try it for yourself. Oh and if you’re not happy, there’s a 100% money back satisfaction guarantee waiting for you! To be honest, I don’t think you’ll need it.
Best Moisturizing & Sulfate Free Shampoo for Colored, Dry Hair: Loma Moisturizing Shampoo
Choose this US made shampoo if you have dry hair which is also colored and foiled. There are no chemical detergents, parabens or gluten products to dry your hair further and strip it of that salon-fresh color you just paid for.
The aloe vera and avocado oil in this one work by adding strength to hair strands whilst jojoba seed oil pumps it full of vitamins E and B. These help to protect hair from damage.
Castor seed oil, creatine (not the stuff they use on the roads!) and quinoa proteins all condition and nourish your hair giving it a silky, healthy glow. They also help to moisturize your scalp which in turn allows healthy production of natural hair oils.
I’ll take a moment to give a shout out to Loma for such a lovely smelling fragrance too. Its mango, orange and tangerine flavours will take you straight to somewhere tropical and sunny, if only for the few minutes you’re in the shower! Please just be careful you don’t start over washing your hair. When it smells that good, the temptation is real!

Best Moisturizing Shampoo For Dry Hair Which Is Prone to Breakage: Jason Natural Cosmetics Moisturizing 84% Aloe Vera Shampoo
A great option for dry brittle hair and also for sorting dandruff. This shampoo from Jason Natural Cosmetics is deeply nourishing.
Have you ever snapped an aloe vera leaf and squeezed the jelly like liquid onto sunburn or a cut? If not, I’m sure you’ve got beauty products in your bathroom which list Aloe Vera as their key ingredient. It’s just so full of goodness! It’s antibacterial, antifungal and full of vitamins. Pretty much a miracle plant and something I WANT to find in my beauty and hair products. I love argan oil and talk about just how great it is but honestly, aloe vera is right up there too.
Aloe Vera can help prevent hair loss too (a common side effect of dry hair). This is because it contains proteolytic enzymes which repair damaged skin cells on your scalp. A healthy scalp is less itchy and less prone to shed hair.
This is a thick, oozy shampoo and you do not need a lot of it. Unless you have very long and thick hair, I recommend starting with no more than a dime size of this shampoo on your palm. If you find you need more to get a rich lather, go for it!
The ingredients list reads like something from a latin textbook: Spirulina Maxima, Equisetum Arvense Leaf and of course Aloe Vera. These are just fancy sounding plant extracts though – there to give your hair a healthy shine.
I urge you to try this shampoo. Purchase a bottle here.
Best All Rounder: Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo
You might have seen Kenra hair products at your salon. Kenra is a brand which is well loved by hair stylists up and down the country. Reliable, high performing and with a great fragrance, I won’t hesitate to tell you that I have more than a few Kenra products in my toolkit!
Kenra’s moisturizing shampoo is a great all-rounder and works well on any hair type but especially so on naturally curly and very thick hair.
For a salon professional range, I find Kenra’s products very affordable and actually, this is actually one of the cheaper ones on my list today. Sure there are cheaper shampoos out there but if you really want to replenish moisture in your hair and give it a natural softness, you need something from an expert.
An emollient and wheat protein rich formula means this shampoo is great at detangling. Simply massage into your scalp and leave for two to three minutes before rinsing and then use your fingers to tease through your hair. Follow with a moisturizing conditioner and allow your hair to air dry. You’ll notice a difference from the very first wash and you’ll love the results. I did and continue to! Purchase now on Amazon
It’s Time To Get Your Moisture On!
If you’re not using one already, I strongly recommend that you add a good quality moisturizing shampoo to your hair care regimen. You need to be washing your hair with it at least once a week, if not more. Choose the right one for your hair type and it’ll play a key role in keeping your locks smooth, shiny and healthy. It does this by nourishing follicles and maintaining a healthy pH balance in your hair.
The majority of these recommended shampoos are wholly or at least partly made up of natural ingredients. Aloe, argan oil and keratin are all excellent at looking after your hair and choosing a shampoo which contains them will put you on the right path for sure.
For total peace of mind though, why not choose one of the 5 shampoos I’ve recommended here today? They are all vetted. I’m a California hair stylist with over seven years experience. I know what I’m talking about and these are the best at what they do.
Trust me. Follow my advice and your hair will be healthy in no time. Healthy hair is easier to style, it feels great and most importantly, leaves you feeling confident and looking fabulous! You go girl!
