Do you struggle with greasy or oily hair? I’ve had plenty of people (male and female) come to my salon on the brink of tears with this problem. It can REALLY destroy a person’s confidence!

First, despite what gossips might say, greasy hair is not always caused by lack of personal hygiene! In fact, a lot of people I see with oily hair are making the problem worse because they are over washing their hair to try and remove that grease. This is where they’re going wrong. Over washing your hair can send your hair follicles into oil production overdrive and even worse, the amount of product (shampoo and conditioner) you’re using can coat your hair and weigh it down.

Unfortunately, this can also cause other issues including a dry scalp and dull, fly away hair. Over washing your hair and using the wrong type of shampoo can be really damaging. I’ve seen so many customers come through my door with a head full of hair damaged this way. Stripped of it’s nutrients it looks dull, almost always dry and brittle, and prone to split ends.

How to find the best shampoo for greasy or oily hair?

Oily or greasy hair is generally caused by two factors:

1) A buildup of excess sebum from your scalp (caused by over or under washing).

2) Gunk attached to your hair follicles from the products you choose to use.

My number one piece of advice is this. You should always pair your shampoo to your hair type. It’s tempting to purchase whatever brand is on sale at the store. No good. Believe me, once you’ve made the switch to a shampoo for your hair type, you’ll find that your problems become a thing of the past!

So, for oily and greasy hair, you need to look for a volumizing or clarifying shampoo and avoid anything too moisturizing because this will only make your hair even more oily. Look for shampoos containing lots of natural ingredients such as herbs and botanicals. These are going to help with the natural oil balance of your scalp.

Customer experiences, recommendations from friends and plenty of my own trial and error have resulted in this list. I’m excited to share with you, my five best shampoos for combatting greasy and oily hair. It will show you which brands and products are best for greasy hair and why they work!

Best Shampoo for Greasy Hair & an Itchy Scalp: Maple Holistics Itchy Scalp Botanical Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women

Sometimes greasy or oily hair comes paired with the unattractive and frankly annoying problem of an itchy scalp. And worse, dandruff. This shampoo from Maple Holistics will solve all of these issues!

It’s important to treat any scalp irritations gently and this shampoo does just that with it’s therapeutic mix of basil, lemon, rosemary and cypress. Combined, these natural ingredients will gentle wash your hair and remove any excess oil whilst also helping restore your scalp’s natural PH levels.

Despite being a great clarifying shampoo (essential for getting rid of grease) it’s actually a very gentle cleanser. This is partly thanks to it being sulfate free. A recent customer of mine has just started using this shampoo in place of her usual brand and is already starting to see positive results. If you want to try it too, why not grab a bottle for yourself here.

This is a very natural shampoo – sulfate free, no artificial fragrance, dyes or parabens. While it seems common sense to say, choosing a natural shampoo which isn’t laden with chemicals is really important when treating an itchy scalp. Although I don’t suffer with sensitive skin, I was impressed by with just how deeply cleansing this product felt after trying it on my own hair. Right now I don’t have an itchy scalp or grease but if I did in the future, this is the product I’d choose.

Best Natural Shampoo for Oily Hair: Natural Oily Hair Shampoo with Organic Essential Oil Formula

It’s increasingly important in today’s world to be environmentally conscious. if you’re keen on doing your bit, this all natural shampoo is definitely the one for you! It uses a mix of organic essential oils including lavender, evening primrose and rosemary to gently nourish your hair whilst stripping it of those annoying excess oils.

The clever use of different botanicals in this shampoo is really impressive. Each one has been carefully thought out for it’s therapeutic benefits. For example, lavender (aside from smelling great) can also help to calm any scalp irritation. Evening primrose oil helps prevent hair loss thank to its high concentration of gamma linolenic acid (check me getting all technical!) which encourages hair growth. Yarrow also helps to regulate the oil glands on your scalp to stop them overproducing.

In all, this is a very impressive product. It’s safe to use on color-treated hair because it’s sulfate free and it does not contain any harsh chemicals or parabens. Nothing which is going to gunk up your hair. I recommend purchasing a bottle now. Expect silky smooth locks and a boost to your confidence in no time!

Best Silicone Free Shampoo for Oily Hair: Fekkai Apple Cider Shampoo

Hear me out on this – Apple Cider? I know what you’re thinking… ‘this sounds more like a drink’. Nope! This shampoo from salon experts Fekkai is actually going to work wonders on your oily hair!

The fragrance released during washing is wonderful, so fresh and crisp thanks to the addition of that apple cider as well as fresh apple and pear. You’ll smell it on your hair all day long!

This is a clarifying shampoo which will give your hair a deep cleanse, removing buildup of oils and other gunk. Most of all, it’s perfect for oily hair. You can stop over washing your hair. This is the solution! Because of its strength as a cleanser, although you can use it daily, some people find they only need to use this shampoo a couple of times a week making it great value for money.

Best Shampoo for Very Oily Hair & Sensitive Skin: Apivita Propoline Balancing Shampoo

Apivita create a whole range of very natural, holistic products for your face, hair and body. This brand was originally set up by two pharmacists looking to harness nature to improve the way we look after our skin and hair. Personally, I’m a big fan of their products.

This balancing shampoo has been designed especially for very oily hair and it’s quite impressive in it’s results. As well as cleaning away grease and oil, it helps to regulate future oiliness. It contains something called ‘propolis extract’ which is antimicrobial and an antioxidant. Furthermore, it means your hair will feel refreshed and hydrated!

Whilst ingredients like thyme and nettle help minimize excess sebum production, the addition of lemon, thyme and mint give it a lovely smell. And we all know how important a great smelling shampoo is!

Their special ‘Bio Cotton Protection System’ helps to maintain the oil balance on your scalp. Again, this helps to reduce oily build up between washes. This is a clever shampoo. It doesn’t just wash your hair, it actually goes right to the root of your problems and fixes them. My conclusion? This is medicine for your hair! Get some now!

Best Organic Shampoo for Healthy Hair & Scalp: Tru Moroccan Moroccan Oil Shampoo

Since I’ve talked about it before, you probably know I’m a fan of Moroccan oil (also known as argan oil). Moroccan oil can bring a natural shine and gloss to your hair. So, as you can imagine, for myself and my customers, I was really pleased when I found this shampoo which has been created specially for oily hair by Tru Moroccan.

Like the others on this list, this is a clarifying shampoo which will help with oily hair, dandruff and an itchy scalp by deep cleansing right to your roots. Like the Apivita shampoo, Tru Moroccan has been formulated to neutralise your hairs sebaceous glands and restore your scalp to a healthy PH level. Basically, this means this shampoo is actually working between washes! How great is that?

A customer of mine uses this shampoo alongside her favorite conditioner and usual styling products. Over all, her hair is very healthy but occasionally she suffers with oil buildup. I believe this is because she home-colors her hair a lot and has done for years. Those harsh chemicals can weaken your hair over time.

If you purchase this shampoo I believe you’ll be getting a high quality product. Best of all? It’s cruelty free and completely natural. There are no artificial additives or colors and no parabens or harmful chemicals whatsoever.

Banish Your Oily Hair Today!

Of all the problems I see as a hair stylist, the one which knocks my customer’s confidence the most is greasy and oily hair. Customers have often told me how sad it makes them feel. Friends have also told me of times they’ve overheard phrases like “Is her hair dirty?” and “Does she not wash her hair?”.

In my experience, almost every time, neither of these statements is true. Something as simple as an imbalance of the natural oils in your hair and scalp is often the cause of oily hair. As I’ve already said, over washing (to try and remove these oils) will usually make the problem worse. Why? All that extra shampoo and conditioner leads to a buildup of gunk on your hair follicles.

Like my customers, you can solve your hair problems by simply switching to a shampoo which has been formulated for greasy and oily hair. I’ve suggested my 5 favorite shampoos for oily hair. If you do suffer with a dry scalp or dandruff, be sure to check out the ones for sensitive skin. After just a few of washes, you should start to see a difference in your hair as your oil balance is restored.

My advise is simple. Just choose the product which best suits your needs and start using it! I promise you’ll have smoother, shiny hair which is full of bounce and much more life!
