Finding the best shampoo for fine hair isn’t always easy. Brands often talk about thicker, shinier hair and brag about their volumizing properties but how do you know which one will really work for you?
Fine hair really is a pain. Not only is it hard to style and prone to brittleness, it’s often oily too. In fact, oily hair and fine hair go hand in hand because oily hair tends to look flat and product build up from using the wrong shampoo only makes this problem worse!
Contrary to what you might think, volumizing products aren’t necessarily going to help if you have fine or oily hair. This is because of several reasons. Firstly, volumizing shampoo and conditioner works by applying polymers to your hair strands to essentially bulk them out. This is great for a lot of people – it gives their hair a thicker, volumized look. But, if you have particularly fine hair, it can actually have the opposite effect! Fine hair can often be oily and easily weighed down by some products. This can make it look even flatter!
Secondly, these polymers or silicon-plastic elements contained in volumizing shampoo can cause greasiness, especially in oily and fine hair. Overtime, the product will build up and make your hair lacklustre.
How to find the best shampoo for fine hair?
My top advice is to stop buying volumizing products! You need to get a good clarifying shampoo which will lift excess product off your hair. A shampoo which is also deeply nourishing will help to give your hair lift and bounce.
Vitamin and mineral rich shampoos without polymers or silicone are going to work best for your hair. Fortunately, there are plenty of fine hair shampoos out there and through research and testing, I’ve pulled together five of the best. Read on to find out more and see how switching shampoo can improve your hair.
Best Shampoo for Fine and Color Treated Hair:
WELLA Brilliance Shampoo & Conditioner Fine to Normal Coloured Hair
Wella is a trusted and well-known brand which has been around for a long time. It’s also a brand you’ll see in salons around the country and comes highly recommended by hairdressers.
This set of Wella Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner is especially formulated for color-treated fine to normal hair. It uses something they refer to as ‘revolutionary triple-blend technology’ and promises hair which is vibrant and full of life. Part of the ‘triple-blend technology’ is the inclusion of diamond dust – yes really! The diamond dust helps to maintain the vibrancy of your hair color wash after wash.
Because this shampoo is so nourishing, it’s a great option for any of you who color or bleach your hair. It’s also a good one for those of you who use straighteners, curling irons and hairdryers on a regular basis.
Does it work? Yes! A customer of mine with long, platinum blond hair, has recently started using this product on my advice and she has noticed her salon-fresh color lasting longer between appointments. She uses the conditioner too, which also contains diamond dust and leaves your hair feeling smooth and nourished. Try it for yourself here.
Best Shampoo for Boosting Fine Hair Volume:
Paul Mitchell Lemon Sage Thickening Shampoo
This shampoo is from one of my personal favourites and comes from another well known salon brand; Paul Mitchell. The bottle promises that the citrusy fragrance will boost your mind, spirit and hair. It delivers on this; it smells incredible!
You can’t help but feel that your hair is super clean and your mind boosted when you use this shampoo because of it’s lovely zingy fragrance which lasts well into the day. Ingredients lemon sage, peppermint and tea tree smell great but are also really good for your hair. This is because they will help strengthen hair to it’s root and protect against split ends – a common occurrence in weaker, fine hair and especially so if you use heated styling tools.
Tea tree is often found in dermatological products and I’m sure like me, I’ve dabbed it on your pimples too. It’s inclusion in this shampoo makes it a great option for anyone with sensitive skin, dandruff and/or fungal scalp infections. Of course, use with caution and always do a test patch if you’re unsure but this shampoo should help.
Subtle thickening agents plump up your hair without overloading it to the point of flatness and I’m confident that daily use will gradually give you the thicker, bouncy hair you’ve dreamed of! I’ve used this shampoo myself and have friends who recommend it too. Grab a bottle here and even use it with the matching conditioner for bumper results.
Best Shampoo for Fine, Flat Hair:
Living Proof Full Shampoo.
I touched on this in my introduction. Often fine hair can look flat and lifeless. Reaching for a generic volumizing shampoo isn’t always the answer. The parabens used to thicken can leave your hair feeling weighed down and ultimately, looking even worse!
This product from Living Proof is the best one I’ve found for giving lift to fine, flat hair. They also make a matching conditioner and thickening cream. Using all three will give you maximum impact but even starting with just the shampoo will give you great results.
This is a gentle shampoo which works by removing the residue and oil from your hair which gives it that flat, lifeless look. Their patented ‘Healthy Hair Molecule’ formula also helps your hair to repel dirt and oil – useful if your hair tends to get oily or greasy within one day of washing it.
It’s also sulfate free (link back to 5 best sulfate free post?) and silicon free so you can confidently use it on color-treated hair. Your hair is going to thank you for using this product and after a couple of weeks you should notice that it’s bouncier, bright and shiny. It should also feel and looks visibly thicker. You can purchase it here.
Best Shampoo for Repairing Fine Hair:
Kerastase Cristalliste Bain Cristal Luminous Perfecting Shampoo for Lightweight Hair.
Although the Kerastase Crisalliste shampoo a little pricier than some of the other shampoos on this list, the results from this shampoo are excellent. It’s well worth the investment as a solution to repairing damaged and fine hair. This is especially true for hair which has been damaged by long-term colouring, over use of heat-styling products and even the weather!
This is a clarifying shampoo with a ‘liquid light complex’ of three all designed to leave your hair feeling smooth, moisturized and bright. For repairing damaged hair, the ‘oil solubization system’ in this shampoo means it’s tough on dirt and oil build up. It’ll clean your hair right down to the roots and leave it feeling super clean and soft.
Kerastase also uses aloe vera which helps to give your hair a luminescent glow. Sounds great right? One customer of mine springs to mind. She swears by this product having tried lots of different brands before hand. Her hair is very (very!) long and was searching for a product which would help protect her ends. She told me that her hair is smoother and feels more polished now. And guess what? There is not a split-end in sight. Try it for yourself.
Best for Fine Hair and a Clean, Dandruff Free Scalp:
Biotin Shampoo for men and women
Although most shampoos are interchangeable for men and women, this one from Biotin is specifically useful for men with fine or thinning hair. The combination of botanicals used has been scientifically formulated to promote hair growth and reduce shedding. The main ingredient (as the name suggests) is Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin. Biotin can help slow hair loss so if you find you shed a lot of hair when you’re washing or brushing it, I’d recommend giving this shampoo a go.
If you struggle with a sensitive scalp or conditions like dandruff, this hypoallergenic shampoo is a good option. Just like the Paul Mitchell lemon sage thickening shampoo, Biotin have included the ingredient tea tree for its dermatological healing properties. Combined with the other botanicals it helps to give a deep but clean, removing dandruff gently but efficiently. A healthy scalp is really important for healthy hair and this shampoo tackles both at the same time.
Tea tree, jojoba, rosemary extract, green tea extract, coconut oil, argan oil, mulberry root, primrose oil and zinc. What do you notice about the long list of ingredients used in this shampoo? Answer: they are all natural. In fact, this shampoo is packed full of environmental credentials. Registered non-GMO and GMP certified it contains no genetically modified ingredients and adheres to international safety regulations. It’s also sulfate and paraben free. Just another couple of reasons to purchase a bottle for yourself.
